How can I engage with messages in Listening?

Message actions provide quick ways to accomplish common tasks within Listening. These actions are similar to how you engage with messages in the Smart Inbox.

You can perform the following actions on messages in Listening:

Translate messages

You can translate messages in Listening to your default language.

Note: Sprout integrates with Google Translate for the language translation feature. Set up your default language in Settings > Personal Settings.

To translate a message:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.

Email messages

You can email a message in Listening to any email address. To email a message:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the three-dot overflow menu Screen_Shot_2022-04-27_at_1.59.20_PM.png on the message you want to email.

  3. Enter up to 50 email addresses. The From field is attached to your account’s email address and can’t be edited.
  4. (Optional) Edit the subject line and email body.
  5. Click Send.

Save message text to the Asset Library

Sometimes a Listening message includes quotes, hashtags or URLs that you want to save for future use. You can save a message as a text asset in Sprout’s Asset Library.

To save message text:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the three-dot overflow menu icon Screen_Shot_2022-04-27_at_1.59.20_PM.pngon the message text you want to save to the Asset Library.
  3. Select Save Text to Asset Library. The Asset window will open.
  4. Enter a title for the asset and any tags or context.
  5. Click Add Asset.

Quote tweet and retweet messages

You can quote or retweet tweets to any of your own Twitter profiles. To repost a tweet:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the three-dot overflow menu Screen_Shot_2022-04-27_at_1.59.20_PM.png on the message you want to quote tweet or retweet.
  3. (For retweets) Select Retweet and select the profile you'd like to use. Your retweet will immediately post to your profile.

  4. (For quote tweets) Select Quote Tweet. The Compose window will open.
  5. (For quote tweets) Select the Twitter profile you’d like to use. 
  6. (For quote tweets) Add any text.

  7. (For quote tweets) Click Send or Schedule.

Repost messages to Facebook

You can repost Page Wall Posts and visitor Posts found on Pages to any of your own Facebook profiles. To repost a Facebook message:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the three-dot overflow menu Screen_Shot_2022-04-27_at_1.59.20_PM.pngon the message you want to repost.
  3. Select Repost to Facebook. The Compose window will open.

  4. Select the Facebook profile you’d like to use and add any post text.
  5. Click Send or Schedule.

Repost messages to Instagram

You can share Instagram posts to your followers with the Repost messages to Instagram feature.

Note: We recommend tagging the original author in your post for attribution.

To repost an Instagram message:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the three-dot overflow menu Screen_Shot_2022-04-27_at_1.59.20_PM.png on the message you want to repost.
  3. Select Repost to Instagram. The Compose window will open.
  4. Select the Instagram profile you’d like to use and add any post text.
  5. Click Send or Schedule.

Like a message

You can like messages from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. If you have multiple profiles on the same social network, you can choose which profile will like the message.

Note: You can only like messages using profiles from the same social network.

To like a message:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the Like icon. On Twitter, the icon is a heart Screen_Shot_2022-11-11_at_2.14.51_PM.png and on Facebook and LinkedIn the icon is a thumbs-up Screen_Shot_2022-11-11_at_2.15.01_PM.png.

Send a message to Compose

You can send a Listening message, including its associated media, to the Compose window. From there, you can create and publish messages to any of your linked networks. To send a message to Compose:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the pencil icon Screen_Shot_2022-10-12_at_5.32.25_PM.png on the message you want to send to Compose.
  3. Select the profile you’d like to use from the profile picker. You can edit the post or add any labels, campaigns or workflows.
  4. Click Send or Schedule.

Start a team conversation from a message

If you discover that a message in Listening needs attention, you can start a team conversation and collaborate with other Sprout users on your team. To start a conversation:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the leaf icon Screen_Shot_2022-10-11_at_5.02.29_PM.png.
  3. Type your message.
  4. Press Enter.

Reply to Twitter messages

You can reply to messages from Twitter.

To reply to a message:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the reply icon image2.jpg.
  3. Compose your reply.

  4. Click Send.

Reclassify a message's sentiment

Messages in Listening are automatically categorized by sentiment as positive, neutral or negative. You can change a Listening message’s sentiment categorization.

Note: Sentiment reclassification only affects the message in Listening, not if it appears elsewhere such as the Smart Inbox.

To reclassify a message’s sentiment:

  1. Navigate to the Messages tab in your Listening topic.
  2. Click the sentiment icon Screen_Shot_2022-10-11_at_4.41.55_PM.pngon the message you want to reclassify.
  3. Select Positive, Neutral, Negative or Unclassified.

If you want to reclassify the sentiment of more than one message at once, you can select multiple messages. 

To reclassify the sentiment of more than one message:

  1. Select the messages you want to reclassify.
  2. Click the sentiment icon Screen_Shot_2023-01-11_at_5.24.46_PM.png.
  3. Select Positive, Neutral, Negative or Unclassified.

Note: Please note that it may take up to a minute for message sentiment changes to take effect.
