Nested Tag Collections Overview 

Tags help you organize and analyze your social and customer care data, but a flat, two-level structure doesn't always match how your organization actually works. Nested tag collection hierarchies let you build a multi-level taxonomy — organizing tags by region, product line, campaign, audience segment, care workflow, or any other structure your team needs, all the way down to seven levels deep. This gives you a more accurate, more flexible way to categorize conversations, content, and performance data across the entire Sprout platform.

How To

Permissions Required 

• This feature is available to customers on Advanced and Enterprise plans.
• Nested tag collections work across Tag Management settings, the Smart Inbox, Compose, Automated Rules, Macros, Feeds, and Reporting. 

Setting Up Your Hierarchy

1. Navigate to Account and Settings, then Settings, then Tag Management under Global Features.
2. When nothing is selected in the left navigation, you'll see the option to Add Collection or Add Tag to get started from scratch.
3. To nest a collection, select an existing collection and click Add Collection to create a child collection inside it.
4. Give your collection a descriptive name (up to 60 characters). The same name can be reused under different parent collections.
5. Continue nesting collections as needed — your hierarchy can go up to seven levels deep.
6. Add tags to any collection at any level by clicking Add Tag while that collection is selected. You can add a tag directly from the collection view, or from either of the quick-add options within a collection

Managing Collections and Tags 

1. To move a tag to a different collection, select the tag, choose Move, and select the destination collection. A confirmation toast will let you know it was moved successfully. 
2. To rename a tag or collection, select Edit and update the name. 
3. To delete a collection with no tags and no nested collections, select the collection and choose Delete — since there's no downstream impact, it's removed immediately. 
4. To delete a collection that has nested collections underneath it, you'll need to first reorganize or remove all nested collections below it. Deletion is not available until no child collections remain. 
5. To delete a collection that contains tags (but no nested collections), Sprout will ask what you'd like to do with those tags first. You can choose to unclassify, archive, or delete them, or cancel and move the tags elsewhere before deleting the collection. 
   • Note: collections that have child collections nested beneath them can't be deleted directly. You'll need to remove or relocate the nested collections first. 
6. Use the All Collections link at any time to reset your view and return to the top of your hierarchy, no matter how deep you've navigated

Exporting Your Tag Taxonomy 

1. In Tag Management, use the export option to download your full tag taxonomy as a CSV. 
2. Each tag is listed with its complete collection path, making it easy to audit, share, or re-import your structure. 

Applying Tags with Nested Collections 

1. In the Smart Inbox, Compose, Post Performance Report, or any area where you apply tags, open the tag selector. 
2. Browse your collection hierarchy to find the right tag, or use the search bar to find a tag across all collections at once — no need to stay within the collection you currently have open. 
3. Tags can be applied from any level of the hierarchy; they aren't restricted to the deepest collection. 
4. When you hover over an applied tag, you'll see its full collection path (for example, a tag called Vanilla might show as belonging to Bakeries Flavors). 

Filtering by Collection in Reports and the Inbox 

1. Open any report that supports tag filtering (such as the Tag Performance Report or a custom report with tag widgets), or use the filter option in the Smart Inbox or Post Performance Report. 
2. Use the tag filter and drill down through your collection hierarchy to select tags from specific levels — for example, filtering to only your gluten-free flavors within a larger Bakeries collection. 
3. Your view will update to show only data for the selected tags.

Nested Tag Collections FAQ

Structure:

•  How many levels deep can my hierarchy go?
  • Up to seven levels. 
• Can I reuse the same tag or collection name in different places? 
  • Yes. The same name can be used under different parent collections.
• What happens if I try to delete a collection that has tags in it? 
  • Sprout will prompt you to choose what happens to those tags first — unclassify, archive, or delete them — before the collection can be removed. 
• What happens if I try to delete a collection that has child collections inside it?
  • You'll need to delete or relocate each nested collection individually first; collections with children underneath them can't be deleted directly.
• Can I see tags that have been archived? 
  • Yes. The global Tag Search In Tag Settings shows both currently active tags and any archived tags that share the same name.

• How do I find the right tag quickly if I have a large hierarchy?
  • Use the global Tag Search in Tag Settings to search across all collections at once, rather than browsing within a single open collection. 
• Can I apply a tag from any level of the hierarchy, or only the deepest one? 
  • Any level. Tags are not restricted to the deepest collection in a branch.
• Can I filter reports by a specific level of my hierarchy? 
  • Yes. Tag filters in reports, the Smart Inbox, Automated Rules, Macros, and Feeds all support drilling down into your collection hierarchy.
