Reddit Support in Sprout Social: Frequently Asked Questions
Table of Contents
To ensure your team gets the most out of this new integration, we’ve compiled the most common questions regarding Reddit profile connection and engagement.
Which Reddit profile types can I connect? You can connect two types of profiles:
- User Profiles: Individual Reddit accounts.
- Moderated Subreddits: Subreddits where your account has administrative/moderator permissions.
Engagement & Moderation
Why do I need to connect both a moderated subreddit and Reddit User Profile to fully utilize this feature?
Both a moderated subreddit and Reddit user account connection are required to be able to see incoming messages, as well as reply to those messages received within your connected subreddit. Each connection will have its own purpose:
- Subreddit connection = your data source. This tells Sprout to pull in posts and comments from that specific subreddit into the Smart Inbox.
- User profile connection = your reply identity. This allows your team to take action—like replying, upvoting, hiding, or deleting content.
Essentially, the subreddit brings the conversation in, and the user profile lets you engage with it!
How do I respond to Reddit content in Sprout?
If you have both a moderated subreddit and Reddit user profile connected to your Sprout Group, you can reply to posts and comments through the Smart Inbox or within Cases. Simply select the message, type your response, and click Send. If you have approval workflows enabled, you can also submit replies for approval.
Can I upvote or hide content from Sprout?
Yes. You can Upvote posts and comments directly. If you are engaging from a Reddit user profile included as the subreddit moderator, you can also Hide or Unhide content.
- Hiding: Removes the message from public view on Reddit.
- Unhiding: Restores the message to public view.
What is the difference between Reddit’s moderation states and Sprout’s "Hide" feature?
Reddit natively uses three states: Pending, Approved, and Removed. To simplify your workflow, Sprout uses a binary system: Hidden and Unhidden. Hiding a message in Sprout is equivalent to removing it from public view natively; unhiding it restores it.
Why don't I see the Reply icon or Upvote icon on a Reddit post/comment?
This could indicate that you do not have a Reddit user profile connected in the same Group OR that you have not been granted permission to a Reddit user profile. To resolve this, be sure to check with your team that a Reddit user profile is connected in the Group (in addition to the subreddit) and that you have been granted Full Publishing permission with this profile.
In order to hide messages, the Reddit user profile will need to be listed as a moderator on the subreddit.
Can I publish Reddit posts in Compose?
Yes! You can now schedule and publish posts directly to Reddit from your connected Reddit user profile.
Can I publish to multiple reddit accounts at once?
No. It is only possible to publish to one connected Reddit account at a time.
Reporting & Automation
Can I use Automated Rules with Reddit?
Yes. You can run Automated Rules against incoming Reddit messages to streamline your triage process, tag messages, or route them to specific team members.
Is Reddit data included in Sprout reports?
Reddit is available as a source in relevant Inbox and Case Management reports, allowing you to track engagement volume and response times.
API & Export Limitations
Why can’t I export Reddit messages to a CSV?
Due to Reddit’s specific API terms of service, Reddit messages in the Smart Inbox cannot be exported via CSV. These mandates apply to all third-party API partners.
Can I sync Reddit messages to my CRM (e.g., Salesforce, Zendesk, HubSpot)?
No. Reddit’s API terms prohibit sending Reddit messages to third-party CRMs or making them available via Sprout’s Public API Messages Endpoint. All engagement must happen within the Sprout platform.
