How to Add Multiple Admin Credentials to a Meta Profile Connection in Sprout

When multiple Meta admins add their credentials to an existing profile connection in Sprout, you create token redundancy — a backup system that keeps your profiles connected even when individual admin tokens are revoked. This is the single most effective step you can take to prevent Meta profile disconnections.

Why this matters
Sprout connects to your Meta profiles using OAuth tokens — essentially authentication keys tied to a specific admin's credentials. By default, Sprout stores one token per profile (from whoever originally connected it).
If that single token gets revoked, your profile disconnects and you lose the ability to publish, respond to messages, and collect data until someone reconnects it.
What revokes a token:
The connecting admin's Facebook password changes
The admin is removed from the Business Manager or Page
The admin's account gets flagged in a Meta security check
Meta throttles the token due to a policy violation (rate limiting)
The admin's 2FA settings change
The admin deactivates or deletes their Facebook account
What multi-credential does: When multiple admins add their credentials, Sprout stores a token from each one. If one token is revoked, Sprout automatically fails over to the next valid token — often without any visible interruption. The more admins who contribute credentials, the more resilient your connection becomes.

Who should do this: Every Sprout user who has Full Control admin access on the Facebook Page, Instagram Profile, or Ad Account in Business Manager. There's no limit on how many admins can contribute — more is better.
How to add multiple admin credentials
Important: This process uses the "Connect a Profile" flow, but you are NOT connecting a new profile. This will NOT create a duplicate, will NOT count against your profile limit, and will NOT affect your existing connection or published content.
Prerequisites
The user completing this must have:
In Sprout: Manage Profiles permission
In Meta Business Manager: Full Control admin access on the specific Facebook Page, Instagram Profile, or Ad Account
"Full Control" vs. "Page Admin": These are different. You need Full Control assigned via Business Manager → Business Settings → People → [Your name] → Assets → [The Page]. Having "Admin" on the Page via Facebook's native Page settings is NOT sufficient if the connection uses Business Manager methodology.
Steps
Navigate to Account & Settings > Connect a Profile in Sprout.
Select Facebook or Instagram (depending on the profile type).

Choose the appropriate connection type:
Facebook Page, Facebook Ad Manager, or Instagram Creator or Business
Click Go to Facebook to complete the authorization.
Select the corresponding Meta Business Manager for your page connections.
On the Pages/Profiles selection screen, you'll see your already-connected profiles with a toggle: "Add additional credentials to this profile."
Toggle it on for each profile you want to strengthen.
Click Next to complete the process.
Repeat for each admin who has Full Control access. The more admins who complete this, the more redundancy you have.
Alternative approach: System User connections (Instagram)
For Instagram profiles, there's a more robust connection method available: Business Manager System User connections.
Instead of relying on individual admin tokens, a System User connection creates a persistent, organization-level integration between your Business Manager and Sprout — it's not tied to any person's account. This means:
No token revocation when individuals leave
No dependency on personal Facebook accounts
More stable long-term connection
Current status (August 2026):

⚠️ Facebook Pages: System User connections are temporarily ON HOLD while engineering resolves issues with Meta

Rule of thumb: Multi-credential protects against individual-level failures. It does NOT protect against Page-level or Business Manager-level actions.
How to verify it worked
Currently, Sprout does not display how many admin credentials are stored per profile in the UI. This is a known limitation — the Profile Health Center (in development) will provide this visibility.
What you can confirm today:
The process completed without errors (you saw the success confirmation on the final screen)
The profile remains connected (green status in Groups & Social Profiles)
Future disconnection events are less likely if you've had 3+ admins add their credentials
What to monitor:
If you receive a disconnection notification for a profile where multiple admins have contributed credentials, it likely means ALL stored tokens were revoked simultaneously (a Page-level or BM-level event). Contact Support in that case.
FAQ
Will this create a duplicate profile or charge me?
No. This process adds credentials to an EXISTING connection. No new profile is created, no additional billing occurs, and your existing data/history is unaffected.
How many admins should add their credentials?
As many as possible — minimum 2–3 for critical profiles. Every additional admin is an additional failover option.
Does the admin who adds credentials need to be a Sprout user?
Yes. They must have a Sprout login with Manage Profiles permission AND have Full Control in Meta Business Manager on the relevant assets.
I completed the steps but the profile still disconnected. Why?
Multi-credential strengthening protects against individual token revocations. If ALL stored tokens are revoked simultaneously (e.g., Business Manager restricted, Page unpublished, or all admins removed at once), the profile will still disconnect. Contact Support for diagnosis.
Does this work for Threads profiles?
No. Threads uses an alternative authentication method on Meta's end and is not in scope for multi-credential strengthening.
What about WhatsApp Business profiles?
No. WhatsApp Business connections use a different architecture. Multi-credential is available for Facebook Pages, Instagram Profiles, and Facebook Ad Accounts only.
If one admin leaves the company, do I need to do anything?
If other admins have added their credentials, no immediate action is needed — Sprout will use the remaining valid tokens. However, best practice is to have a new admin add their credentials to replace the departed one. This maintains your redundancy level.
Can I see which admin's token is currently being used?
Not currently. The Profile Health Center (in development) will provide token-level visibility. Today, Sprout automatically selects the healthiest available token.
