How do I identify ads with multiple versions?

Dynamic Creative & Placement Asset Customization Ads

Dynamic Creative (DCO) ads from Facebook take multiple ad components (such as images, videos, titles, descriptions and CTAs) and then optimizes them to deliver efficient results for each impression served. These help you create personalised creative variations for each person viewing your ad.

Here's a page from Facebook about dynamic creative ads: Dynamic Creative. You can also consult this PDF from Facebook which outlines how it compares to regular dynamic ads: Compare dynamic creative and dynamic ads. Placement Asset Customization (PAC) ads also run multiple placements but have a different set-up than Dynamic Creative ads.

At this time, Sprout can't receive Instagram comments on ads that use Dynamic Creative Optimization (DCO) in the Smart Inbox, due to network restrictions. If you’d like to see this functionality in the platform, provide this feedback to your Sprout representative.

How can I tell if my ad has multiple versions?

There are three methods you can use to determine if you’re running a multiple placement ad or not.

First Method

  1. Visit your Facebook Page.
  2. Scroll down to the Page Transparency section.
  3. Click See All.
  4. Scroll down, and then click Go To Ad Library in the pop-up window.
  5. Select All in the first drop-down menu (by country) under Filter.
  6. Find the ad, and if it states This ad has multiple versions. then this confirms the ad is using  Dynamic Creative or Placement Asset Optimization. Sprout doesn’t expect to receive comments on the ad from Facebook or Instagram.DCO_AD_1.png

Second Method (for Dynamic Creative)

Identify Dynamic creative ads using the following steps:

  1. Visit the Ads Manager Dashboard.
  2. Click the Campaign that holds one of your Ads with missing comments (this opens up the Ad Set level and isolates all Ad Sets present in the campaign).
  3. Select the Ad Set that’s delivering the Ads and Edit.
  4. Verify whether the Dynamic Creative section is toggled on in the right-hand side pop-up.Screenshot_2020-10-13_at_11.10.41.png
  5. If toggled on, this confirms the ad is using Dynamic Creative and Sprout doesn’t expect to receive comments on the ad.

Third Method (for Placement Asset Customization)

  1. Visit the Ads Manager Dashboard.
  2. Click the Campaign that holds one of your Ads with missing comments (this opens up the Ad Set level and isolates all Ad Sets present in the campaign).
  3. Select the Ad Set that’s delivering the Ads and Edit. In this scenario, the Dynamic Creative toggle is switched off at the Ad Set level.Screenshot_2020-10-13_at_11.14.35.png
  4. Close the pop-up, and then click the Ad Set name (this isolates the Ads within the Ad Set).
  5. Edit one or more of the Ads present.
  6. Click the three-dot icon at the top right.
  7. Navigate to More Options > Manage Facebook Comments.
  8. See if the URL contains a "dco_ad_id=” tag. This means the ad is running multiple versions and Sprout doesn’t expect to pull in comments on the ad into the Smart Inbox.

Additional Context for Placement Asset Customization

This is activated by Recommended Aspect Ratios being toggled on during the Ad Level creation process.

This triggers the Placement Asset Optimisation to display the list of creative and the different placements.

For Placement Asset Customization, the final ad states This ad has multiple versions when you view the ad in Facebook’s Ad Library (refer back to First Method).

Sprout doesn't currently support PAC or DCO ads within the Post Performance report at this time.
