Share Threads Post to Instagram Story

Sprout users can automatically share a Threads post to their linked Instagram Story directly from Sprout Compose at the time of publishing.

The Share Threads post to Instagram Story toggle found under Threads Options in Compose tells Meta to mirror the published Threads post to the Instagram Story of the Instagram account linked to that Threads profile.

Note: there is not an option to customize the Instagram Story layout within Sprout and the final layout is determined by Meta. Text-only Threads posts are rendered as an image by Meta.

What to know about the Share to Instagram Story Toggle

  • The resulting Instagram Story will appear as a sent post in both the Calendar and Post Performance Report.

  • However, the Instagram Story will not appear as scheduled post in the Calendar due to the fact that it is created by Meta at the time of publishing.

  • The Instagram Story is not attributed back to the Threads post in Sprout Reporting.

  • Two things must be true on Meta's side for the cross-share to work:

    • The Threads profile must already be linked to an Instagram account natively

    • The Threads profile must be authorized in Sprout with the correct permissions. If your Threads profile was connected before this feature became available, you will see an alert in the Compose Window prompting you to update the connection:

  • If the Threads post publishes but no Instagram Story appears, the Threads post itself is still considered successful (it will not show up in Failed Posts), however, no failed post warning would be issued for the Instagram Story.

  • This feature is only available in the Sprout web app and is not supported in the Sprout mobile app or Public API

Threads Publishing FAQs

I changed a team member's permissions to include Full Publishing for Threads, but it still doesn't show up on their account. Why?

If your Threads profile is present in multiple groups, make sure that (a) you've assigned Full Publishing permissions in the correct group and (b) they're attempting to publish to the Threads profile via the group where they've been assigned Full Publishing permissions.

What posts can I publish to Threads?

You can publish Single image, Text Only and Video posts. Polls and Surveys are currently not supported via the Threads API, so these must be created directly using the native interface.

I turned on the "Share Threads post to Instagram Story" toggle but no Story appeared on Instagram. Why?

The most common cause is that the Threads profile is not linked to an Instagram account. If the Threads post itself still published successfully, please check that your Threads account is managed in the same Meta Accounts Center as your Instagram profile.

Is the option to share your Threads post to your Instagram Story available in the Sprout Mobile app or the Public API?

No, the toggle is only available in the Sprout web app at this time. The Public API does not support per-network settings.

Can I customize how the Instagram Story looks when using the share Threads to Instagram Story option?

No. Meta determines the Story layout. Text-only Threads posts are rendered as an image by Meta.
