How do I use the Google Analytics Report?

Table of Contents

After you connect a GA4 property to Sprout Social, you will be able able to access a curated Google Analytics Report report in the Cross-Network reporting section.

The intention of this report in Sprout is to display traffic to your website that has occurred from your social posts. The Google Analytics metric driving this report in Sprout is “sessions” which measures the number of clicks to your website. Specifically, this would be tracking times in which users are clicking a link to your website from the social posts you've published.

This data all comes from Google Analytics directly and is driven off of the UTM parameters you are using in the links you are sharing to your social profiles. With this report in Sprout, you can chart the number of clicks to your website (sessions) over time. You can also see the breakout of web traffic by source.

Google Analytics Report FAQs

Can I see traffic from other mediums besides social in this report?

No. This report only collects data and sessions where the utm_medium includes the keyword "social." Traffic from other mediums won't appear in this report.

Why am I not seeing any data available in my Google Analytics Report?

This report only collects data and sessions when tracking parameters have been applied to links and the utm_medium includes the keyword "social." This would mean that in the links you’re creating and adding to your posts, you would need to structure your UTM to include both "utm_medium=social" and "utm_source=" in order to have their website clicks pull into your report in Sprout and see a breakout of the network source.

Will my GA4 data be backfilled?

Yes. Sprout backfills 1 year of data with a maximum of 10,000 data entries into Sprout. Google Analytics doesn't do any backfills on newly created GA4 properties, so shorter history in Sprout will exist if Google hasn't collected data further back on a newly created GA4 property.
