Facebook Groups

No matter where you’re interacting on social you want to ensure that your brand messaging stays consistent to give your audiences the experience they’ve come to know and love. Facebook Groups are a great way to keep your audiences feeling like they’re in your inner-circle and get more direct access to your brand. 

With Sprout Social, you can post as your company’s brand page, rather than on behalf of a user, directly to your owned Facebook Groups. This keeps your brand messaging on-point and gives you the flexibility to schedule and manage more content across your social channels.

Note: Due to an API limitation, the new Facebook Pages Experience is not supported for Facebook Groups in Sprout. If your Facebook Group is moved to the new Facebook Pages Experience, you can no longer access that Facebook Group in Sprout.

Connecting Sprout to your Facebook Group

Before you connect your Facebook Group to Sprout, there’s a few quick checks and prerequisites you should complete to ensure the connection process goes smoothly.

Note: Due to an API limitation, the new Facebook Pages Experience is not supported for Facebook Groups in Sprout. If your Facebook Group is moved to the new Facebook Pages Experience, you can no longer access that Facebook Group in Sprout.


Use the following steps to determine everything is set up correctly for a quick connection process. Remember, only an admin for the Facebook Group and the attached Page can perform these prerequisites:

  1. Is a Facebook Page linked to your Facebook Group and do you have admin access to the Facebook Page?
  2. Are you a member of the Facebook Group you want to connect?
  3. Did you add the Sprout Social app on Facebook to your Facebook Group?

Facebook Page Linking & Admin Access

When you create a Facebook Group, you’re prompted to link to your Group to a Facebook Page. However, you can also link a Page to the Group later using Facebook’s Advanced Settings. To ensure the Group you want to connect to is linked to a Page that you’re an admin of:

  1. Click Settings under the Admin tools for the Group.
  2. Scroll down to the Advanced Settings section.
  3. Click image2.png for Linked Pages. A popup appears.
  4. Select the Page you are an admin of.
  5. Click Link.

Facebook Group Membership

In order to connect your Facebook Group to Sprout for publishing, verify that you're a member of the Group. If you aren’t currently a member of the group, send a request to the admin of the group to request membership.

Finally, in order to complete the connection, you must have the Sprout Social app installed to the Facebook Group you want to add. 

To add the Sprout Social app:

  1. Navigate to the Group on Facebook.
  2. Click Settings under the Admin tools for the Group.
  3. Scroll down to the Advanced Settings section.
  4. Click Apps > Add Apps.
  5. Search for the Sprout Social app.
  6. Click Add.

After you complete the prerequisites and verified that everything is set up correctly, you can connect your Facebook Group to Sprout.

Connecting your Facebook Groups

To connect your Facebook Group to Sprout:

Note: You can only connect a unique Facebook Group once for each Sprout group. Facebook Groups count toward your profile limit.

  1. Navigate to the group in Sprout where you want to connect your Facebook Group to.
  2. Click Account and settings > Connect a Profile. The Connect a Profile popup appears.
  3. Click Facebook.
  4. Click Connect Group.

  5. Review and Confirm the details on the popup. Click Yes, all set when finished.
  6. Click Go to Facebook. Facebook opens, and you see a list of the Facebook profiles that you are an admin for.
  7. Select the Page that’s linked to the Facebook Group you want to post to, and then click Next. You’re taken back to Sprout and your Group is now connected. and then you can select the Groups you want to connect.

Publishing and managing Facebook Group content

After you connect your Facebook Groups to Sprout, you can start posting and scheduling content to appear in the group. You can add image, video and link posts and add locations or mention another Facebook Page in your post.

Publish to your Facebook Group directly from Compose, schedule content through the Publishing Calendar or through the Sprout Queue and draft posts to schedule later. 

Note: Audience Targeting and boosting aren’t supported for Facebook Groups.

To publish content to your Facebook Groups: 

  1. Click image9.png. The Compose window opens.
  2. Select the Facebook Groups you want to post to from the Profile Picker.
  3. Craft your post with text, videos, links or a single image. 
  4. Schedule a time to post your content, whether in the future or immediately.
  5. Click Schedule or Send.

After you schedule and publish your content, you can manage it from the Content Calendar, Sprout Queue or the Drafts tab to see the content at a high-level.

In the month view in the Content Calendar, Facebook Group posts are grouped and counted in their own category (outside of Facebook Profiles) so you can easily distinguish between the two post types. 


You can use the Filter Menu in the Content Calendar, Sprout Queue, Draft and Approval tabs to filter down to your Facebook Groups, so you can focus on those posts specifically.


Note: Sent video posts aren't visible on the Calendar.

Managing Facebook Group messages in the Smart Inbox

Before you get started interacting with your Facebook Groups from the Smart Inbox, you need to add the Sprout app on Facebook. If you don’t add the Sprout app to your Facebook Page, your posts will appear as coming from an anonymous user and not the Page that owns the Group.

You must authorize the app from the Facebook Page you own that sponsors the Group. Due to API limitations from Facebook, you can only interact with your Groups as the Page that sponsors the group. You won’t be able to interact as an individual Group moderator or admin from Sprout. 



  • User refers to Sprout users in the following considerations. We are mostly referring to the individual user that authenticates the group in Sprout must be sure they are set natively to interact as the Page and not themselves.
  • Member refers to the audience member, not a Sprout user. The audience member has to allow Sprout to read their data in order for Sprout to pull it into the app. If a member doesn't authorize Sprout when they receive a pop-up, then Sprout can only pull in an anonymous Facebook user profile.

Be aware of the following:

  • When you post to your Facebook Group, the attribution of the post shows as the Facebook Page that owns the group. 
    • For example, Let’s say Nike created a Facebook Group called Chicago Running Enthusiasts. When Nike goes into Sprout to post to Chicago Running Enthusiasts, the posts appear in the Group as being posted by Nike, and not Chicago Running Enthusiasts or an admin from the Group.
  • If a Sprout user authenticates the Group in Sprout sets their native Facebook experience as interacting with the Group as themselves, then all likes made in Sprout will appear as interactions from that individual user and not the Page. 
  • When an audience member of your Group is engaging with the Group, by posting messages or comments, they need to grant access to the Sprout app. If access isn’t granted, the posts from the Group member appear in Sprout as coming from “Facebook User” and they remain anonymous. 


  • If a user likes your Facebook Page and is a member of your Facebook Group, they’ll have two separate profile cards in Sprout. Due to API limitations, there isn’t a way to combine these profile cards. 


Managing messages

After you connect your Facebook Group to Sprout, you’ll start seeing comments appear in the Smart Inbox. These messages appear with an indicator to denote the Facebook Page that owns the Group. You also see the Facebook Group icon next to the name of the Group.

In the following example, the R denotes the Facebook Page called Random Tigers. Hover over the indicator to see which Facebook Page owns the Group.


On the messages from your Group, you can:

  • Like
  • Tag
  • Pin
  • Reply
  • Email the message
  • Send the message to an integration

You can’t delete Group messages from the Smart Inbox due to a Facebook API limitation. You can click the timestamp of the comment to navigate to Facebook and delete it from the Group directly.
