How do I set up tracking for Instagram Story and Tag Mentions through Meta's Messenger API?
With Sprout Social Influencer Marketing's integration with Meta, you can connect your Instagram Business Accounts to track Instagram Stories and Posts in which your Brands were mentioned.
Connecting your Instagram Accounts
To start tracking your Instagram Story and Tag Mentions, navigate to the Integrations Tab in the Organization's settings, and then click Instagram Story and Tag Mentions.
Click Manage Instagram Accounts to navigate to Instagram's experience of adding your accounts. Select the Instagram Business Accounts you want to track Story and Tag Mentions for, as well as the Facebook Pages connected to these Instagram Accounts.
Instagram Story and Tag Mentions Video Guide
If you connected Instagram Story Mentions before March 12th, 2024, go through the Add Instagram Account flow again to grant Influencer Marketing additional Tag Mentions permissions and ensure your Stories keep working after April 12th, 2024.
Make sure that your Instagram Business Account DM settings allow third-party apps to access your messages. To do this:
-
Navigate to Settings & Privacy for your Instagram Business Profile.
-
Scroll down and find Messages and story replies .
-
Tap Message controls .
-
Ensure that Allow Access to Messages under Connected Tools is turned to ON .
Keep in mind that without the above adjustment in your Instagram Settings, your Instagram Story Mentions can't be tracked.

If you don't have access to your company's Instagram accounts, you can use additional functionality to invite people from outside your organization (Collaborators) to connect these Instagram accounts to your organization.

Enter your social media admin email address, and then click Invite Collaborator. The social media admin then receives an email with an option to connect an account.
-
Click the Continue button in the email.
-
Enters the name, and then click the Add Instagram Account button.
After a successful connection, you can see Collaborators on the list:
Tracking Story and Tag Mentions in Your Campaigns
After you connect your Instagram Accounts, the Story and Tag Mentions automatically populate for all of your Creators in all of your Campaigns which fulfill both of the following criteria:
-
Campaign's Brand Profile references the Instagram Business Account you've connected (in this example - Sprout Social Influencer Marketing) AND
-
Creator who mentions your Brand is hired in this Campaign
Functionalities and Limitations
This functionality lets you see if the Creators in your Campaign are mentioning your Brand in their Stories and Posts. You have a chance to see the asset of the Story for the first 24 hours from its creation, as it expires after 24 hours.
To comply with Facebook's requirements, there are a few limitations that you need to be aware of:
-
You can only see the Story assets for the first 24 hours from its creation. This means that after 24 hours, Influencer Marketing displays a placeholder in place of the actual Instagram Story.
-
The Story and Tag Mentions are available in Campaigns, Profiles, and Signals reports, based on the profile they mention. They're not available in Discovery.
-
You won't have access to any Stories that fail to properly mention an Instagram account that Influencer Marketing has appropriate permissions for. This means that stories won't be pulled based on keywords.
-
You only have access to Stories and Posts created by Creators that are in your Campaigns.
-
You only have access to Stories and Posts created by Creators with Instagram Creator/Business Account.
-
You can't see historical Story Mentions that were created before your Instagram Account was connected.
Once you connect your Instagram Accounts, additional Story Mentions can get added to your existing Campaigns, as they won't be restricted by your Campaigns' keywords settings.
